In ninth-century Salerno, a physician from Carthage arrives carrying a revolutionary conviction: that medicine is not found in ancient texts alone, but in careful observation of the living patient.

With three other destined individuals, he begins to build something unprecedented—a place where knowledge is tested against reality, where tradition is questioned with humility, and where physicians learn from one another across difference.

But in a world governed by inherited authority and rigid belief, their commitment to evidence, dialogue, and patient-centered care marks them as dangerous.

City of Physicians traces the founding of the Salerno Medical School through the lives of those who dared to imagine that healing could be transformed by the simple act of paying close attention—and asks what we might learn from physicians who understood that the best medicine begins with listening to the patient before you.
